Worried about the high cost of drugs and alcohol, the FDA is now warning consumers not to buy the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra online as it may lead to more serious side effects.
The drug has been linked to more serious side effects when it comes to heart, lung or liver problems and should be used under the guidance of a doctor. It can also increase the risk of stroke, heart attacks and kidney problems.
“Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs should never be used by men who have diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol,” the FDA said in the letter that was released today. “This is a potentially life-threatening situation and it’s important that men who have diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol do not use Viagra or other erectile dysfunction drugs.”
The FDA is also advising men who have a history of heart attacks or strokes to stop taking Viagra and to seek advice from their doctor if they experience chest pains, dizziness, fainting or lightheadedness while taking the medication.
The FDA said the drug is a prescription medication and it is not known to cause serious side effects, such as priapism (a prolonged and painful erection).
The letter was updated to clarify that the agency has not approved the sale of the drug without a doctor’s prescription.
The FDA said it is “reviewing the data and the data supporting these decisions, and will take appropriate steps to ensure this information is accurate, up-to-date and COMPLETE.”
Consumers should always check their local telehealth service to make sure they are not being taken by a doctor or other health care provider that may be able to give them advice on the risks and benefits of the medication.
“Consumers should not expect to receive product information via the Internet or in person from their local, state or federal health care provider,” the letter said. “Consumers should also exercise caution when purchasing erectile dysfunction medication online and should check the product’s expiration date on the label of the prescription drug before taking it.”
The FDA also urges people not to buy or use any other prescription or nonprescription ED medication, including those containing sildenafil or tadalafil, vardenafil, tamsulosin or avanafil, as it may cause serious side effects.

Viagra, the brand name for the drug, was originally developed to treat erectile dysfunction. It was marketed by Pfizer as Revatio® and was first approved by the FDA in 1998.

Sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil, tamsulosin and avanafil are the brand name of the drug. Both drugs are prescription medications used to treat erectile dysfunction. The FDA says the FDA has not approved these drugs.
